Mountain Retreat
Santa Rosa, Calif.
private residence
OVERVIEW
This retreat at the top of the hills hosts both soaring eagles and a couple who wanted to escape from their
primary home in the city without leaving behind their urban style or sensibilities. A new wing containing a
master suite and pool bath was added to the existing structure, the rest of which was completely gutted. R&R
Design Studio rebuilt the interior with an open footprint and a soft, easy flow. Natural art was already
provided, as the glorious views to the valley floor were put first and foremost in every design decision,
from walls of glass doors spanning both levels, to a neutral color palette, to the placement of windows in
every room to frame the outdoor beauty. A gourmet’s dream, the kitchen feeds into the dining and living spaces,
creating an indoor–outdoor flow for both large-scale entertaining (there are three sumptuous guest suites to
fill, after all) and cozy, casual tête-à-têtes. Beautiful details such as stone walls and fireplaces, a Murano
glass chandelier and tactile finishes make this an elegant yet comfortable getaway from city life.
HIGHLIGHT
The cherrywood bar, which skirts the kitchen and serves as a full party center, is topped by a solid piece of dark, rich walnut that was shaped and curved to the space.
