San Rafael, Calif.
This custom-built, two-story log cabin needed to work on many levels, accommodating the day-to-day lifestyle of an active family, as well as frequent entertaining on both small and large scales. R&R Design Studio worked with the architect and builder to refine the initial footprint into an open and flexible plan, integrating the clients’ needs, wants and wishes. In this highly functional home, rooms blend into other rooms, furniture is interchangeable, and indoors meld to outdoors. An extensive use of wood throughout — including the hand-hewn floors, soaring ceilings and rich detail work — complements the deep, earthy tones of the color palette. From the tranquil sound of the water fountain that greets visitors just inside the front doors to the dramatic burnt-red dining room with its custom-crafted parquet table, the overall feeling is approachable yet elegant, casual yet sophisticated.
The natural river-rock fireplaces — two inside and one outside — perfectly illuminate the indoor–outdoor flow of the home.
